Wicklow, the county town of County Wicklow, is a charming town nestled on the eastern coast of Ireland, around 30 miles or an hour’s drive south of Dublin. It’s a small town, but has many attractions and makes a great base to explore the region or to stop off at on a road trip down the east coast. The historic centre is worth taking some time to explore, while the countryside around includes world famous gardens, folk museums, historic houses and nature trails.

From here, it is an easy drive straight down the N11/M11 to Wicklow. There are several other locations around Dublin that may be more convenient for picking up a rental vehicle, including Dublin City Centre, West Dublin, Dublin North, Dublin Airport and Swords, depending on where in the city you are staying. Attractions in Wicklow

Attractions in Wicklow include Wicklow’s Historic Gaol, where audio-visual displays and interpretation tell the stories of Irish history, including the 1798 rebellion, famine and the Irish war of Independence. The ruins of the Black Castle, meanwhile, are a short walk to the eastern part of town, where the castle stands brooding on a promontory over the sea, giving panoramic views in all directions. The Murrough is a coastal wetland area, the largest on the eastern coast of Ireland, and a superb example of natural heritage where bird and wildlife-spotters flock to see the many species found there. Ballymurrin Quaker Farmstead is another historic attraction where visitors can explore the house and homestead of the new settlers known as the Quakers, and experience their daily struggles and simple agricultural lives.

Places to Visit Outside Wicklow

County Wicklow has many more attractions waiting to be discovered beyond the town walls, and renting a vehicle makes it easy to get out and about into the region. The region is well-known for its beautiful gardens. The historic houses and gardens include Mount Usher, Russborough House, Dower House, Festina Lente Gardens, June Blake’s Garden, Kilmacurragh National Botanic Garden, Hunting Brook Gardens, Killruddery House and Gardens, to name just a few.

Parking is available at all out-of-town attractions. In Wicklow Town, there is free parking at the Park and Ride facility on Mill Road or visitors may park in zoned areas, with the zone colour determining how long you may stay for – the red zone is a maximum of two hours while you may park all day in the blue zone.

    The essential items you will need to bring to an Enterprise Rent-A-Car branch when hiring a vehicle are a valid drivers licence, valid ID, and a credit or debit card.   2. Do I need insurance to rent a car or van?
    No. At Enterprise you don't need to purchase insurance as we provide a damage waiver within the cost of your hire.   3. How old do I need to be to hire a car or van?
    All drivers must be a minimum of 25 years old. Only drivers over 30 years old may hire full-size MPVs, premium vehicles/exotic cars and Luton vans. Learn more about age requirements for hiring a vehicle here.
  4. What are the driver's licence requirements for car hire in the UK & Ireland?
    All drivers must produce all parts of a valid driving licence. Non-EU licence holders are required to have an international driving permit if the licence is not in English. Domestic renters must produce photo id, passport or driving licence.
